Beneath the surface

Every year thousands of tourists flock to the tiny island of Santorini to enjoy a relaxing holiday in the sun. At the same time a transient work force travels to the same island to work the holiday season serving the tourists. This project explores the contrasting relationship that these transient populations have with this otherwie inhospitable volcanic island. Causality

This project explores the idea that there is an indexical link between our individual activities at a local level and the undeniable changes taking place with our environment. It is easy to consider climate change a distance, eroding glaciers are far away from most peoples daily lives. The work invites the viewer to consider whether the cause and solution lies with each of us individually rather than the governments that are supposed to represent and protect us.  "the difficulty is to persuade the human race to acquiesce in its own survival".
